Is EMS safe?
Yes, EMS is scientifically proven and safe when supervised by a certified instructor. The technology works by activating the muscles above the layer of fat which protects your organs. It is not technically possible for the electricity to bypass this, making this training technique entirely safe providing the client has no medical conditions (see below).
Which medical conditions are contraindications meaning I can’t do EMS?
Implanted or external medical devices / cardiovascular diseases / neurological disorders / medicated or non-medical seizures or convulsions / neuromuscular disorder / cancerous lesions / nephrological disease / internal bleeding / non-intact skin / pregnancy / type 1 diabetes (EMS is actually very beneficial for type 2).
The above conditions are hard contraindications, however, it may be possible to use the EMS approach with other conditions, providing you have sought medical approval in advance.
How often should I train using EMS?
Twice a week is ideal for most individuals to see significant results in their physique and strength. There must be at least 48 hours between sessions to allow your muscles time to repair.
Who can use EMS?
EMS is suitable for all adults above the ages of 18 and for all fitness levels, but a consultation is recommended for those with medical conditions.
Does it hurt?
No. Expect to feel strange sensations as the electrical impulse travels through your body, but you quickly get used to it. Straight after the session you’ll feel energised similar to after a hard conventional workout. If you’ve worked hard you may experience some muscle soreness (DOMS) up to 48 hours after the session.
What happens in a session?
Arrive in comfortable clothes, but don’t worry about bringing special gear – we’ll provide everything you need! You’ll be provided with a comfortable cotton undergarment designed to minimise interference with our training suit, which you get to keep when you decide to become a regular client. As a regular client, you’ll get a full consultation and body composition scan to understand your fitness goals and provide us with a benchmark. We’ll rescan regularly in order to track your progress using consistent data points.
Next you’ll be fitted with a specialised EMS suit to wear over the base layer that includes electrodes to stimulate your muscles during the workout. We have a number of suits to fit all shapes and sizes, which are sanitised with a special cleaning product before and after every training session.
We will guide you through simple, effective exercises tailored to your fitness level, while the EMS technology enhances your muscle engagement. Sessions last just 20 minutes, but you’ll feel like you’ve done a much longer workout! Please bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, and a hand towel.
